What to Look For in Your Next HDTV - See our LG LCD or Plasma Television

LCD TV's & Plasma HDTV's are the hottest thing to hit the television market in decades. Picking the proper HDTV LCD or Plasma is more confusing than picking any ordinary television ever was. All the new features, digital inputs, HDTV ready vs. HDTV capable... The same question is always asked - What do I need??

Here is What you should know about HDTV and LCD & Plasma TV's

What is a HDTV?

A HDTV features a high-definition tuner and monitor to properly decode and display HDTV signals. Current models can have either the built-in tuner or an external tuner so take notice of this when purchasing an HDTV.

Most HDTV sets have wider, more rectangular screens than current analog TVs using the 16:9 aspect ratio. This wide screen format allows for wider images that are more like those you see in a movie theater. Like current TV sets, a range of sizes is available. As with most new consumer electronics technologies, HDTV sets have become less expensive since their introduction.

Benefits of HDTV

  • Picture Resolution: HDTV double or triple the amount of picture lines seen on tradition televisions. The result is crystal clear images, with razor sharp detail.
  • Aspect Ratio: Aspect ratio, or the ratio of height to width of the image is significantly better on HDTVs. Traditional TVs use an image aspect ratio of 4:3, or 4 units wide and 3 units high. HDTV takes advantage of the human eye's ability to see much wider aspect ratios and displays images at 16:9 or the same aspect ratio as theatrical movies.
  • Sound Quality: HDTV sound system, comparable to that on CDs, is a significant improvement over the analog sound found in traditional TVs. HDTV also enables the use some of the more advanced forms of surround sound typically found only on DVDs.

What are the various HDTV formats?

  • 480 interlaced (480i): The digital imitation of traditional analog television, 480i provides a sequential 480-line display with a 30 Hz refresh rate. This is considered Standard Definition Television (SDTV) and is supported by most HDTVs.
  • 480 progressive (480p): Another Standard Definition Television (SDTV) format that displays 480 lines progressively, the same way a computer monitor does, thus reducing flicker and motion artifacts.
  • 1080 interlaced (1080i): The first of the HDTV formats, it means 1080 picture scan lines are shown from top to bottom as interlaced fields. The 1920 pixels per line result in just over 2 million pixels on the screen.
  • 720 progressive (720p): 720p scans 720 picture scan lines at a 60 hr refresh rate. Proponents believe the high refresh rate produces the same "perceived quality" as the 1080i format, but the HDTV units can be produced for significantly less mone
  • 1080 Progressive (1080P) the shorthand name for a category of video modes. The number 1080 represents 1,080 lines of vertical resolution[1], while the letter p stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced. 1080p is considered an HDTV video mode. The term usually assumes a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, implying a horizontal (display) resolution of 1920 dots across and a frame resolution of 1920 × 1080 or exactly 2,073,600 pixels. The frame rate in hertz can be either implied by the context or specified after the letter p (such as 1080p30, meaning 30 frames per second).

LG LCD TV's and Plasma TV's - What you should know...

Q: How do plasma TVs and LCD TVs differ?

Since they use different methods to display images on the screen, they produce different results. Plasma TVs are best at producing powerful big-screen images with lots of impact, whereas LCD TVs are good at producing subtly modulated images in brightly lit rooms.

With their powerful Large-screen images, plasma TVs are ideal for the whole family to watch together.
  • Large screen

  • Living Room

  • Family Viewing

In a plasma TV the panel itself emits light, so the entire screen produces bright images with deep, expressive blacks under typical living room lighting conditions. Dynamic sequences with lots of motion, such as sporting events or action movies, are rendered smoothly and fluidly. The wide viewing angle and powerful impact of plasma TVs makes them ideal for group viewing by the whole family together.

A wide variety of LCD TV models are available, perfect for personal viewing.

  • Medium or Small Screen

  • Personal Viewing

In an LCD TV the screen is illuminated by a backlight. They are relatively unaffected by reflected glare and deliver bright, subtly modulated images even in brightly lit rooms or near windows through which the sun is shining. They are lightweight and can be moved about easily, which means they can be placed almost anywhere the user likes. LCD TVs in screen sizes of 32 inches or less are ideal for personal use and offer plenty of flexibility.
